Hospitality Architecture in the Gulf: Designing for the Next Wave of Tourism
Gulf tourism is expanding beyond city hotels. What developers should consider when designing boutique hotels and resorts in the region.

Tourism across the Gulf is changing shape. Alongside the city towers, there is growing demand for boutique hotels, desert camps, mountain lodges and coastal resorts.
What makes Gulf hospitality design different?
- Climate. Outdoor spaces must be genuinely usable — shade, breeze, water.
- Culture. Family travel, privacy, separate facilities and prayer spaces.
- Seasonality. Designing for peak winter occupancy and quieter summers.
- Landscape. Desert, mountain and coastal sites each need their own architecture.
What do guests remember?
Rarely the lobby marble. They remember arrival, the view from the room, the shade at the pool and the quiet at night. Design should invest where memory is made.
How should developers approach a first hotel?
Bring in the operator's standards early. Brand requirements affect room sizes, back-of-house and circulation — and they are expensive to retrofit.
