Courtyards: The Oldest Cooling System in the Gulf

The courtyard house cooled Gulf families for centuries. Why it still makes sense in contemporary villa and residential design.

Long before air conditioning, Gulf homes turned their backs on the street and opened to the sky. The courtyard was the lung of the house.

How does a courtyard cool?

Shaded courtyards hold cooler air, especially at night. Surrounding rooms draw light and air from the protected centre instead of from hot, exposed exterior walls. Planting and water add evaporative cooling and humidity where it helps.

Why does it suit Gulf family life?

Privacy. A courtyard gives children outdoor space, family members freedom from being overlooked, and every room a view — without a single window to the street.

How do we use it today?

Not always as a full central void. It might be a light well, a shaded side garden, a courtyard between majlis and family wing, or a double-height internal patio.

Does it cost floor area?

Some. But it returns daylight, ventilation, privacy and quality of life — and can reduce cooling energy. On most villa plots, it is area well spent.
